Michael W. Klein, JD, PhD, became the executive director of New Jersey Association of State Colleges and Universities in January 2012, after serving the Association more than 13 years as director of government and legal affairs.

Before joining the Association, Michael served for five years in former Governor Christine Todd Whitman's administration as an assistant counsel to the governor, deputy director of legislative affairs for the Department of Treasury, and special assistant to the commissioner of Community Affairs.  Michael has also served as legislative director to then-Assemblyman Leonard Lance, now a member of Congress, and as an associate at the law firm of Pitney Hardin Kipp & Szuch (now Day Pitney).

Michael has published articles on college finance, higher education policy, intellectual property ownership, entrepreneurship, collective bargaining, and the First Amendment.  His articles have appeared in publications such as the Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, the Journal of Education Finance, the Journal of College and University Law,  Research in Higher Education, the Journal of Law and Education, and the Hastings Constitutional Law Quarterly.  He co-authored a chapter on New Jersey's higher education system in Richardson, R.C., Jr. & Martinez, M., (Eds.), Policy and Performance in American Higher Education: An Examination of Cases Across State Systems (2009).  Michael's op-ed pieces have appeared in the New York Times, Newsweek, the Philadelphia Inquirer, Inside Higher Education, and the American Bar Association Journal.

Michael has made presentations before the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)/Institutional Management in Higher Education in Paris, the Oxford Education Research Symposium, the International Conference on Learning at the University of London, the NCAA, the American Education Research Association, the Association for the Study of Higher Education, the National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education and the Professions, and the Annual Conference on Distance Teaching & Learning at the University of Wisconsin.  He has guest lectured at Rutgers University, Louisiana State University, North Carolina State University, East Carolina University, and San Diego State University.

Michael was a 2003 fellow of the Higher Education Law Roundtable at the Institute for Higher Education Law & Governance, University of Houston Law Center, and a 2010-2011 Associate of the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education.  He was a fellow of Leadership New Jersey in 2002.  Michael is a member of the Policies and Purposes Committee and the Council of State Representatives for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).  Michael formerly served on the national Higher Education Government Relations Task Force.

Michael received a BA in history cum laude from Princeton University, a JD from Boston College Law School, and a PhD in Higher Education from New York University.
