Welcome

NJASCU is a leading voice for public higher education in New Jersey.

Acting as an advocate in the state capital, the Association analyzes and monitors public policy issues and legislation affecting its member institutions.  In cooperation with trustees, students, faculty and campus administrators, ASCU plays an active role in developing and proposing state higher education policy to better serve New Jersey's citizens.

The Association has been a leader in achieving landmark legislation, in 1986 and 1994, which transferred important fiscal and administrative authority to the campuses from state government, emphasizing trustee governance and direct public accountability.  The state colleges and universities are among the most autonomous public institutions nationally.

Serving as a primary information resource for its member institutions, NJASCU provides analyses of higher educational policy issues such as:

  • college access and affordability;
  • higher education finance trends and comparisons;
  • laws affecting trustee governance, ethical standards, and student welfare;
  • the need to increase the capacity of the state colleges and universities to serve New Jersey students amidst unprecedented enrollment demand; and
  • addressing the needs of emerging student populations, including student veterans.

Voters See Public Colleges and a Priority Investment Linked to Jobs and Future Prosperity, But Don't See a State Plan

NJ likely voters say state colleges and universities are key to economic recovery, merit more state investment to fulfill this role, and are trusted to make educational and financial decisions.  However, these public institutions need to do more to show the public they are working hard to contain costs and keep tuition affordable -- a big concern of Jersey residents, many of whom have experienced economic setbacks.  Read press here See poll results.

NJ Governor's Higher Education Task Force Report

The recently released report of the Governor's Higher Education Task Force, chaired by former Governor Tom Kean, ties higher education to the state's future competitiveness and prosperity better than any other study since the 1990s.  The Association strongly endorses the report, recognizing that certain issues surrounding graduate medical/nursing education deserve further study.

The Association supports timely implementation of the recommendations and advocates principles in support of the report.  View supported principles, here.

For veterans seeking a college degree ...
To serve student veterans and active duty military -- and New Jersey colleges and universities which help meet their higher education needs -- NJASCU launched Operation Promise for Servicemembers (OPS) and Operation College Promise (OCP).  OCP is a statewide program supported by an American Council on Education/Wal-Mart grant.  For more information about these programs and other veterans/servicemembers programs and benefits, go here.
